Valencia Avocados Direct from the Tree: The Secret to Their Flavor

Valencia Avocados vs. Supermarket Avocados: Why Do Ours Taste So Much Better?

? You can see what our avocados look like right here! ?

Every year we notice it more: the demand for our avocados keeps growing. Anyone who tries an avocado grown here and ripened naturally has a hard time going back to buying them from the supermarket.

Due to this incredibly high demand season after season, at QuieroNaranjas we are adapting our lands and planting more trees to ensure sufficient production. The fact is, we have a huge advantage: our area of La Ribera (Valencia) has a privileged climate and soil that turn out to be exceptional for growing this fruit.

What is the difference between our Valencia avocados and those from other hemispheres?

This is the key question, and the answer comes down to one word: ripening.

  • Supermarket avocados (from other countries): For an avocado to survive a weeks-long boat trip across the ocean, the farmer is forced to harvest it when it is still very green. After that, it spends weeks in cold storage rooms. This interrupts its natural cycle; that is why, when you open it at home, you often find it hard as a rock, tasteless, or full of black strings inside.
  • Valencia avocados (Km 0): Since they don’t have to travel halfway around the world, we leave the avocado on the tree until it reaches its optimal fat content. When you place your order, we harvest it and send it straight to your home, without going through any cold storage. The result is clean, super creamy flesh (like butter) and an intense flavor reminiscent of nuts.

What are the properties and benefits of avocados?

The avocado isn’t just a trend; it’s a superfood backed by doctors and nutritionists. It stands out mainly for:

  • Healthy fats: It is extremely rich in oleic acid (the same kind found in olive oil), which helps reduce bad cholesterol (LDL) and protects your cardiovascular health.
  • More potassium than a banana: A single avocado contains more potassium than a whole banana, an essential mineral for preventing cramps, taking care of the nervous system, and keeping blood pressure in check.
  • Highly satiating: Being rich in fiber and good fats, it keeps you full for hours, helping to control appetite and improving digestion.
  • A bomb of vitamins and antioxidants: It is loaded with Vitamin E (a powerful natural antioxidant that hydrates skin and hair from the inside), plus B vitamins, Vitamin C, and folic acid.

Do avocados make you fat? The great myth

Many people wonder if eating avocados daily causes weight gain. The answer is no. Although it is a calorie-dense fruit due to its natural fats, these are “good fats” that the body uses as high-quality energy, rather than storing them like it does with industrial pastries. Half an avocado a day is the perfect ally for any balanced diet.

Expert tips: How to ripen and store avocados at home?

Since we send you the avocados freshly picked from the tree, they will arrive hard at your home so they can survive the trip perfectly. Here are the answers to what we get asked the most:

  • How to ripen an avocado quickly? If you want to eat it soon, put it in a paper bag (or wrap it in newspaper) along with a banana or an apple at room temperature. These fruits release natural ethylene, which will speed up ripening in a couple of days.
  • How to store half an avocado so it doesn’t turn black? If you only eat half, save the side with the pit. Squeeze a few drops of lemon juice on it or brush the surface with a little olive oil, wrap it in plastic wrap directly touching the flesh, and put it straight into the fridge.

Why is the Ribera area so good for growing this fruit?

Traditionally, the Valencian Community has been the land of citrus fruits. However, in areas like ours (La Ribera Alta and Baja), the Mediterranean microclimate is a treasure for avocados.

Unlike tropical climates where it rains excessively (causing the fruit to retain a lot of water and be less flavorful), our drier climate makes the avocado concentrate its essential oils much more. This is how we achieve that dense texture and spectacular taste without needing post-harvest chemical treatments.
