That is why we have taken our farming philosophy a step further.
We receive more and more questions from customers who want to know exactly how we care for our trees and what lies behind the fruit they receive at home. Today, we want to answer those questions and explain why our commitment goes far beyond the traditional organic seal.
🌱 What exactly is regenerative agriculture?
Regenerative agriculture is a farming model that seeks to restore, conserve, and improve soil health and local biodiversity. Instead of viewing the orchard as a simple fruit factory, we understand it as a living ecosystem where every plant, microorganism, and insect plays a fundamental role. The goal is not just to maintain the land, but to leave it more fertile, alive, and resilient than we found it.
⚖️ What is the difference between organic and regenerative agriculture?
This is the question you ask us the most. Organic farming (certified in our case under the strict CAECV regulations[cite: 8]) sets a standard for what we must not do: it prohibits the use of pesticides, herbicides, and synthetic chemical fertilizers[cite: 8]. This is an excellent and absolutely necessary starting point.
However, regenerative agriculture focuses on what we must do to enhance the environment. It goes a step further. For example, under European organic regulations, certain treatments and natural chemicals are authorized for pest control. At QuieroNaranjas, we do not even use those authorized chemicals. We prefer to rely on the absolute natural balance of the ecosystem rather than applying any kind of treatment that alters life in the orchard.
🚜 How do we apply this model in the fields of QuieroNaranjas?
Our way of working the land is based on observation, respect, and patience. We apply this through three fundamental pillars that make the difference in our fruit:
- 🌿 The protective soil mantle: We never till or plow the land. Plowing destroys the soil structure and releases carbon. Instead, we let the natural plant cover grow and, when the time comes, we simply mow the grass. This cut grass remains on the ground forming a protective mantle (mulch) that retains moisture, protects the earth from the sun, and, as it decomposes, creates its own organic fertilizer full of nutrients.
- 🐞 Beneficial fauna instead of insecticides: As we mentioned, we do not use chemicals. To control pests, we release and encourage beneficial fauna. A perfect example of our biological control is the release of Cryptolaemus, a small natural predator that combats pests on our trees in a completely clean and natural way[cite: 1, 6]. We let nature itself do the protective work.
- ☀️ Smart and sustainable water management: We optimize natural resources to the maximum. We irrigate our fields ensuring that clean energy reaches every last drop of water for our trees, thanks to a system powered by 100% solar energy generated by our own farm’s panels[cite: 4, 8].
